Patient Counselling Support
Quick reference for common questions
Practical summaries to support patient conversations. Not CPD β just useful context when a patient asks.
Most tinnitus is benign and associated with some degree of hearing loss. Key counselling points: reassure that tinnitus is common (~15% of Australians), it usually improves with time and management, and effective treatments exist. Refer for audiology assessment when tinnitus is persistent (>3 months), causing sleep disturbance or distress, or is unilateral/pulsatile (which warrants ENT review). We offer sound therapy, tinnitus retraining, and LACE auditory training.
Research consistently shows an association between untreated hearing loss and accelerated cognitive decline (Lancet Commission on Dementia, 2020). Hearing loss is identified as the largest modifiable risk factor for dementia. While causation is not established, addressing hearing loss through amplification and communication strategies may help reduce cognitive load and support social engagement β both protective factors for brain health. We frame this carefully with patients: “looking after your hearing is one of the things you can do for your brain health.”
Phone us directly for: sudden sensorineural hearing loss (within 72 hours), unilateral hearing loss or tinnitus without obvious cause, hearing loss with neurological signs (facial weakness, vertigo, headache), severe otalgia with hearing loss, suspected acoustic neuroma. These may need same-day or next-day assessment and possible ENT fast-track.
Most ear wax can be managed in general practice with irrigation or microsuction. Refer to us when: wax is obscuring the tympanic membrane and you need an audiological assessment, the patient has a history of ear surgery or perforation (we use gentle curette/suction), the patient wears hearing aids and has recurrent wax issues, or standard removal has been unsuccessful. We offer microsuction and curette removal as part of our hearing aid maintenance pathway.

Patients are saying…
In this interview Connie recommends Holistic Hearing Solutions because “Therese seems to be able to analyse it better, and not tell you wonderful stories β¦ but tells you exactly how it is β¦ She is very easy to talk to, I like her, and you can tell her everything … She really listens and gets to know really what I need.
Morris says before, when he and his family would go out, he felt isolated and embarrased. His family would say things and he would not know what it was. Now, with hearing aids, things are going very well. Louie’s expertise was key. He showed me how to use and to maintain the hearing aids.
