I did something a little different recently. I invited five of our clients out to lunch.
Before we went, l asked each of them to pop into the clinic. I fitted them with the latest hearing technology and carefully fine-tuned everything using real ear measurements-so I knew they were hearing at their best.
Then I smiled and said, “Perfect. Now take those out.. and put your old hearing aids back in. We’re going to lunch.”
The typical restaurant chaos
Picture this:
- A busy restaurant.
- Plates clinking.
- Voices overlapping.
- Background music humming away.
Five lovely people sitting around a table… leaning in… smiling politely… missing bits of conversation… asking each other to repeat things. You could see it happening.
- The effort.
- The fatigue.
- That subtle withdrawal that so many people don’t even realise they’re doing.
It’s the exact moment I hear about in clinic every day:
- “I’m fine one-on-one… but I avoid restaurants now.”
- “I just nod along sometimes.”
- “It’s exhausting.”
The moment that changed everything
And then I said: “Okay… now switch to the new Al-Enabled Hearing Aids we have set-up earlier.”
What happened next is something I won’t forget, because moments like these are why we choose to become audiologists.
One patient looked straight at me, eyes wide, and repeated in some sort of surprised voice:
“I can hear you!”
Just like that, conversation around the table changed.
- People sat up straighter and they laughed more.
- They interrupted each other (in a good way).
- They became part of the conversation again.
One of my older patients-who had been quieter earlier-suddenly became the most engaged person at the table. Telling stories. Responding instantly. Fully present.
Not louder hearing.
Clearer. Effortless. Natural.
Why does this happen?
Here’s the interesting part…
Every single one of those patients thought their current hearing aids were “working fine.”
And they weren’t wrong.
But hearing technology has moved forward—quietly, steadily—over the last few years.
Modern devices can now:
- Separate speech from background noise far more effectively
- Process sound faster and more naturally
- Automatically adjust to complex environments like restaurants
- Learn your preferences over time
What they experienced at that table wasn’t just more volume…
It was clarity in chaos
And that’s where the real difference lies.
The part most people don’t realise
Hearing changes slowly.
So slowly that your brain fills in the gaps.
- You turn the TV up a little.
- You choose quieter catés.
- You sit closer.
- You start saying. “It’s just the noise in here.”
And your hearing aids?
We can adjust them… re-tune them… optimise them…
But only up to a point
Sometimes, it’s not about adjustment anymore it’s about capability.
So how do you know when it’s time to check?
It might be worth a conversation if:
- Restaurants or group settings feel like hard work
- You’re asking people to repeat themselves more often
- The TV volume keeps creeping up
- Your hearing aids aren’t lasting like they used to
- You’ve had them for 4-5 years or more
This doesn’t mean you need new hearing aids.
It simply means it’s worth exploring.
Because hearing is about moments like this
That lunch reminded me of something important.
Hearing well isn’t about test results.
It’s about being in the moment.
- At the table.
- In the laughter.
- In the conversation you don’t want to miss.
And sometimes, people don’t realise what they’ve been missing…
until they hear it again.
Curious what you might be missing?
Come in for a check-up.
No pressure. No obligation.
We’ll:
- Check your hearing
- Optimise what you already have
- And if you’re curious… let you experience what’s possible today
Who knows… We might even have to organise another
